"More Fun than a Coon Captured in a Can!"

The dark woods all around me are silent… too silent. As I grope around for a light, I suddenly remember those large creatures that had remained unidentified by skittering out of my friend’s lantern just minutes ago. They could be back. I realize… maybe this hadn’t been such a good idea.

How did I get myself into this situation? It started with a simple walking during my youth group’s camping trip. I accompanied a friend down to the showers so that she could get ready for bed. Back at camp, everyone had been talking about getting a night game of Capture the Flag going as dusk fell. My plan was to join them when I got back. Coming out of the shower house, My friend and I found that the evening had become at least ten times darker then when we went in. This wasn’t that big of a problem though, as my friend produced from her bag a small LED lantern. But as we came to the camp grounds, we found it eerily silent and empty.

I had imagined that we’d play the game at our campsite. Now, however, after further thought I realize, with all the camping tools, sharp cooking equipment, a steep drop off into a dark icy lake, and not being able to see, wouldn’t have been such a good mixture. Figuring everyone else was at the meadow where we went to play sports all the time, I dropped my friend off at our tent. Before leaving, though, I looked through my things for my flashlight. But In the limited light of her lantern, I couldn’t find it. So I made the fateful decision to go back to our main campsite and look for a light source there.

So that’s how I got here now. The embers of the fire behind me are glowing with their last bit of life and the darkness falls thick over their dying breath. The breeze had died and now the air is still. Oh, so still and silent. There are not even any crickets out, filling the air with their music. I kneel on one side of the pick-nick table, feeling around the sticky green tarp that’s been used as a table cloth. My thoughts start to chide me for not thinking things through. Of course there wouldn’t be any lights out here, there hadn’t been very many the night before and what we did have is probably with the rest of the group at the meadow, or put away somewhere in a bin along with sharp kitchen knives; not sitting out on the pick-nick table. But still, I grope around with little hope of finding one. With these discouraging thoughts, and the continually sinking feeling of missing out on a good Capture the Flag game with the rest of my friends, I don’t take note of the fact that the bag of marshmallows – which we had been enjoying minutes ago around the campfire – was gone. Neither did I notice that the gram crackers were gone also. If I had taken note of these things, I would’ve only assumed that they had been put away. Just as I am about to give up, an ever so slight rustles comes from the other side of the table. That’s when the memory of those creatures emerges at the edge of my mind. I freeze as something not more than three feet away from me moves.

Against the darkness of night the silhouette of something darker slowly rises up in front of me. It’s the head of a raccoon, starting straight at me.

What frightened me in that moment was not the fact that it was a raccoon. No, it was the fact that the creature showed no signs of fear. The fact that it was staring me down with invisible eyes as if he belonged here and I didn’t – and that he wanted me to leave; plus the fact that it was a wild creature within arm’s reach in the dark of night; those are the reasons my heart stopped for a moment. And in that moment, two facts flashed through my mind.

One; raccoons can bite.

Two; they could possibly attack.

Then I was off, down the gravel road and bolting towards the girl’s tent. A rustling in the bushes behind me, that my amped up imagination made into an angry coon giving chase, only made my heart race faster. “Quick, let me in! Something’s following me!” My excited, fear filled voice causes my friend to feel frightened too as I tumble into the tiny tent and try my best to quickly zip up the door with shaking, adrenaline filled veins. After breathlessly recounting about the head in the dark, my friend asks;

“Is it a stalker!?” I laugh, realizing I forgot to mention that it was an animal; so I reassured her that it was a raccoon – not a psychopathic killer – chasing me through the forest.

I decide, under the circumstances, that I’d better stay in the tent and miss out on the game of Capture the Flag.

Soon a flashlight moves around in the main campsite. Someone had come back. “Who’s there!?” My friend calls. The light stops moving for a second,

“Huh?” The unidentified person asks. My friend, thinking it’s one of the guys, questionly calls out his name. Relief calms my hands, still trembling from left over adrenaline, at the thought of one of my best friends being out there, and knowing he’s a hunter makes me certain the raccoons won’t be a problem for long. But then the person identifies himself, not as my best friend, but as our youth pastor.

Still, I’m extremely relieved, even if it’s not a coon killing eighteen-year-old out there.

I emerge from our tent to help assess the damage the raccoons had left in their wake.

Sunday Social

1. Tell us about the family you grew up in, parents, siblings, grandparents.

I grew up with 3 brothers and 2 sisters. My oldest sister was graduated and out of the house before I was very old; so she’s always been the angelic older sibling that I look up to. I could say a lot about my older brothers, but I’ll sum it up by saying that Oldest Brother and Brother were my main playmates and friends (most of the time.) Older Brother was away from the house most of the time. Little Sister has always been my best friend and worst enemy depending on our moods for the day. I have always been thankful for my mom, who has always encouraged me to be who I am, even if that is weirdly different from everyone else at times. And even though my dad doesn’t always seem to understand me, and even when he’s agreeing with me he makes it sound like I’m wrong and he’s right, I still am thankful for him too.

2. Tell us about your husband, fiancé, boyfriend, significant other.

Obviously since I’m a teenager I don’t have a husband, or fiancé. And I’ve never had a “boyfriend” in my life, although the majority of my friends have been boys. Never will I have one, either. I refuse to think about boys in that way and see them instead as either friends, or possible friends. That being said, I do have a ring on my left ring finger. It represents my promise to stay single and live my life for God alone, as well as the added promise to have pure friendships. So in a way, if you suspend all judgment and ignore how awkward and messed up it sounds, that kind of makes God/Jesus my fiancé… which God calls the church his “bride” so I’m not completely a lunatic for typing that! So I’ll talk about Him; ready for pages upon pages of writing? No? Okay, I’ll try and keep it short then. Jesus is my Savior, my Bestest Friend; always there when I need someone to talk to, comforting me when I’m scared (which is most of the time!), and always by my side protecting me from the fears that come with the darkness of night. I could still go on some more, but instead I’ll just sum it up like this; He is my All.

3. Tell us about your children. If you don’t have children, talk about your fur children.

My “fur child” is my black and white cat, Snarfy. She’s fat, grumpy, and cold. That’s how others see her. To me, she’s the Queen of the house; beautiful, independent, and prideful. Even though she acts tough, she’s extremely loving in her own way. She’ll walk around the house calling out “Mouw-wa!” until she’ll find me, Brother would always joke that it’s like she’s calling me “momma.” When I look at her, lying in the sun across the room and think how beautiful she is, she’ll notice me looking at her and for a moment her green eyes sparkle with a warm love. Then she’ll look away, as if she doesn’t notice me at all, although I can tell she’s still watching me from the corner of her eye. And whenever I was upset, crying alone on my bed, she’d come and curl up next to me; not asking to be petted, simply being there with me, pretending to not notice my tears. Ay-yi-yi! The more I think about her, the more heart broken I am that I’ve had to leave her behind in the cities with Oldest Brother because we can’t have pets at our senior living home.

4. Tell us about your best friends. How long have you known them? How did you meet?

God has blessed me with bringing some amazing friends into my life when we moved down here to the country. The term “Best Friend” is thrown around so much in this culture that I often wonder if people really mean it when they use it nowadays. Me being a person quick to call just about everyone my friend, but slow to call someone a “Best Friend,” I would say that I have a handful of really good friends, and out of that, three best friends. All three go to my church and I’ve known them for about two years now. One I saw the first Sunday my family visited the church. There were three boys a few pews ahead of us after church and two things that stood out to me about him from the other two was his tallness (literally “stood out”!) and his large, western style belt buckle, which made me contemplate how interesting country people are. My other two best friends I met the next Sunday when I went to Sunday School. That was the the first time since I was about twelve that I wasn't the only one in the class! I was introduced to the one and she invited me to come sit with the rest of the teens before Sunday School started, then I sat by her in Sunday School as well. And my other best friend I met after church and we found out that we were both homeschooled! I’m very reserved when it comes to sharing my feelings about other people; but I think I can manage to say that I’m thankful every day for my friends. Especially for the fact that they are so different from me; both athletically and in lifestyle. It challenges me to go outside of my comfort zone and try new things and to understand people that have different interests than me. God had definitely made me a better person because of my friends.

5. Tell us about any other special people in your life.

When I was little, one of my best friend’s mom was a big influence on my life. She had just recently become a Christian and hadn’t learned all the “Christian” rules of acting yet. She showed this goody-two-shoes-teacher’s-pet little girl who thought being a Christian was about being good, that there was a lot more to having “Jesus in her heart” than putting on a mask of being perfect. Another person was my Sunday School teacher when I was little. She would have a different cat story almost every Sunday. One specific Sunday, I was sitting next to her before Sunday School started. For some reason I had worn fancier clothes and perfume that Sunday. She leaned over to me before a song started and whispered “don’t be in too big of a hurry to grow up!” That made me wake up and realize what am I doing trying to act “grown up!?” Now, I’ve made up my mind to never be a grown up. Ever. I’m just a little girl constantly being awed by her Abba’s beautiful world. There are so many other people who have had an impact on my life, but I’ll stop putting you to sleep with my ruminating for now!

Sunday Social

1. Favorite Genre of Music?

I really don't have a favorite. Just about everything that I hear I like. I used to say that I don't like country or rap, but lately I've found that songs that I like fall under those categories as well, so it's safest to say that whatever I like, I like; and what I don't like, I don't like. Pretty much my life motto.

2. Favorite Genre of movies?

Anything but romance. I would have to say action movies, sci-fi/fantasy, and comedy are my favorites though.

3. Do you watch Reality TV? If so what was the first show you remember watching

I watch reality TV somewhat, but not as much as I do actual shows. The first show I can remember watching was probably Fetch!, a game show where kids learn and experience different activities, all depending on that episode’s theme. The game show host was an animated dog… yup, really fun to watch plus, I still remember a bunch of stuff that I learned from it too! Who said TV is brainless?

4. Actress you’d want to be BFF’s with?

I don't have a large list of favorite actresses, and the ones that I'd actually want to hang out with are even fewer. It would be between Evangeline Lilly and Chloe Grace Moretz. I like Evangeline because she's a tom boy and not very girly, but I also know she uses a lot of bad language. Because of that I think I’d pick Chloe Grace Moretz instead, although I don't know her personality as well. But she's my own age, and she says her mom would ground her till she's eighteen if she heard her using some of the language that her characters use in movies (she’s in some pretty bad roles, actually. I only know her from the movie Hugo.)

5. Actor you’d be happy to be stuck on an island with?

Umm... I don't know… I right away start thinking about all the action heroes that have the skills to survive, like Jason Bourne, or John Locke, but then I remember that the actors are only acting! Most of those guys are just regular (although I'm sure very fit) guys. Viggo Mortensen would probably be the best choice because he's actually an outdoors man and is able to fish and build a fire and all that stuff for surviving on an island; plus, he's an artist, poet, and photographer as well! (How do I know? I watched 24 hours of behind the scenes of The Lord of the Rings Twice.)
